Windows doesn't have much to offer when it comes to navigating on a local network. It keeps you waiting when you connect to a remote computer and it does not display too much information. If you explore your network with Network Scanner, you will not encounter such limitations. The software is designed to retrieve a wide range of information, from the available machines on your network to shared resources or access rights.

Network Scanner can be installed like any other application. The setup wizard will guide you through a series of simple configurations, after which it will install the program's files right away. If you intend to use this software for personal reasons, you can request a free activation key.

As the program's name suggests, you can scan your network for available computers. Network Scanner allows you to target individual computers, by specifying their names or IP addresses, but it is also possible to scan an entire IP range. The best part is that you don't have to type names or addresses each time you want to start scanning. You can save individual IPs or ranges in a list, on the main interface. When you need to look up a computer's resources, you can select the appropriate IP range and click a button to start scanning.

Before scanning a network, you can set the program to look for certain services, like NetBIOS, FTP or HTTP resources and others. If Network Scanner finds any computers, it will display them in a tree structure on the same user interface. You can use various options, located on a toolbar, to access a selected resource from a remote computer, to add comments and more. Another possibility is to open a computer or one of its folders as a FTP, Telnet, RDP or web server.

A computer's folders or other resources may be displayed with small icons, if they are locked, accessible and so on. You can apply filters if you want to locate specific items faster. A series of predefined filters are available, but you may create your own, by adding keywords to a list.

Pros

The software can scan a range of IPs quite fast. It allows you to view and access a remote computer's resources in different ways. You may also create and apply filters, to find certain resources instantly.

Cons

The software does not provide an offline help file, but this is not a serious drawback. With Network Scanner, it takes only a few clicks to view resources, access rights and other details, for any number of computers, on your local network.
